American Flange Application Standard System (ANSI FLANGE)

The American National Standard ANSI B16.5 “Steel Pipe Flanges and Flange Fittings” is a relatively complete, mature, and internationally popular and universal advanced standard. The pressure piping application standard system composed of this standard and other related ANSI, API, ASTM, and MSS is formed on the basis of a large number of experimental studies and has undergone decades of practical testing. Therefore, it is a scientific and advanced standard. Widely accepted by various countries.

The abbreviations of WN, SO, BL, TH, LJ, SW in the American standard flange mainly indicate the welding structure of the flange neck and the simplified or connecting pipe:;
wN (welding neck) is [slip on flange] so (slip on) is [slip on flange]
BL (blind) is [flange cover], also called “blind plate” TH (thread) is [threaded neck flange]
LJ (lap joint) is [loose flange] This type no longer exists in the new standard in 2009 and has been repaired.

Example 1: ANSI B16.5 150Ibs 3″M flange
ANSIB16.5 is the American flange system; 150LB is the pressure rating of 150 pounds; 3″ means that the size of the flange is 3 inches; the code name of the raised face flange is M, and the raised face flange needs to be matched with the concave face flange, commonly known as “one Male and female”, M face flange needs to be connected with FM face (concave and convex face MF).
Example 2: CL150, WN/RF, STD, A105, ASME B16.5 flange
ASME B16.5 is the implementation standard for flanges, which belongs to the American system and is popularly called the American Standard. The domestic standard is called the national standard, and the industry standards include the standards of the Ministry of Chemical Industry and the Ministry of Machinery. STD, A105 is the material of the flange, which belongs to carbon steel. WN, is the code name for butt-welded flange with strength, which means high neck, and PL flat welding, SO flat welding with strength, RF is the sealing surface type! It is the raised face! CL150 is the pressure of the flange, which is about 2MPA.

ASME is the American Society of Mechanical Engineers ANSI is the American National Standards Institute
They all have their own standards and standard numbers. The pressure rating is in the ANSI standard, but the ASME standard now directly refers to this standard. This phenomenon is very common in American standards. For example, ASME SA105 is equivalent to ASTMA105, ASME B16.5 Equivalent to ANSI B16.5 and so on.
